Few such authoritative and prescriptive protocols exist for the assessment and avoidance of runaway reaction hazards.

Meet the trainers

Dr Stephen Rowe - Managing Director, DEKRA Organisational and Process Safety

Dr Stephen Rowe manages the activities of the DEKRA Organisational and Process Safety business in the UK. He graduated in Applied Chemistry with First Class honours from the University of Portsmouth – a course of study that included a year in the ICI Process and Hazards Studies Group in Blackley, Manchester where his enthusiasm for process safety was founded. He then undertook research on the use of reaction inhibition techniques for the control of runaway polymerisation reactions; gaining a PhD through the Chemical Engineering department at University of London (South Bank). He has a career background in the assessment of chemical reaction hazards and the laboratory assessment of a full range of process safety hazards including dust, gas and vapour flammability and explosives characterisation.

He is an experienced trainer and regular contributor to national and international process safety conferences and symposia. As a manager, Stephen Rowe focuses on building successful teams and growing the organisation in a customer-centric manner. He oversees, and is actively engaged in, the company’s quality and safety management systems (ISO9001 and ISO45001). He successfully completed a postgraduate certificate in Engineering Management (with distinction) through the University of Bath, He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Chartered Chemist, a Member of the Institute of Directors and an Associate Member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Amy Theis - DEKRA North America

Amy Theis is a recognised safety professional with more than 20 years of experience in the chemical, pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries. She has comprehensive background in the identification of chemical reaction hazards including facilitating Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) studies. She specialises in calorimetry test design for safe storage, transportation and processing of reactive chemicals including emergency relief system design for reactive chemicals.

Her current role as Business Development Director of Energetics and Explosives allows her to ensure that clients obtain the correct testing data to characterise their process hazards. Her education includes a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering as well as being a professional engineer in the state of Illinois (USA).
