Practical Aspects of DSEAR Compliance Success

The flagship IChemE accredited four-day course from DEKRA Process Safety, Practical Aspects of ATEX / DSEAR Compliance Success, will take delegates through the most important technical aspects of understanding and managing the risks of industrial explosions. Delegates will learn about the legal requirements as outlines by the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) and ATEX Worker Protection Directive. The specific areas that will be covered are:
- Hazardous Area Classification (i.e., Zoning) for gases, vapours and dusts and strategies for controlling and preventing hazardous flammable atmospheres.
- Ignition Assessment, which will entail detailed discussion on equipment selection, static electricity and non-electrical mechanical equipment.
- Fire and explosion hazards and severity assessment. We will help you appreciate the most common and different types and industrial fires and explosion. This will also entail practical and accessible tools for assessing the severity of fires and explosions.
- Explosion protection systems such as explosion venting, suppression and containment systems. This section will cover the scope of applicability, pros and cons of each protection method.
- DSEAR Risk Assessment. By this point, all the various areas discussed above will be logically integrated, and practical guidance on carrying out a ‘suitable and sufficient’ DSEAR risk assessment will be given.
The course is jam-packed with practical examples, demonstration, and videos with well-designed slides and written-out course notes for personal reading. The course will be delivered with effective teaching methods and seeks to create an informative and enjoyable experience for delegates.
The course can be booked as a complete four day package, or as individual/multiple days dependent on personal requirements.

- How to control static electricity to prevent or reduce fire and explosion hazards.
- The characteristics, hazards and assessment methods of various fire and explosion events.
- Explosion protection systems such as explosion venting, suppression and containment systems. This section will cover the scope of applicability, pros and cons of each protection method.
- How to carry out a DSEAR Risk Assessment with knowledge on selecting the right strategy for the right situation. Delegates will be introduced to the pros and cons of qualitative vs quantitative risk assessments.
- How to prepare and maintain documentary evidence of having undertaken the above assessments.
