Audits for Safe Work Processes

04 Nov 2019

Independent audits and assessments help to improve operational processes and, in turn, enhance safety on company premises. Customers, too, are in-creasingly demanding that their suppliers certify themselves in accordance with occupational health and safety and environmental standards. In addi-tion to the new international standard ISO 45001, DEKRA’s audit experts are also seeing increased demand for systems that cater to the needs of special-ist industries.

  • Customers are increasingly demanding occupational health and safety man-agement systems
  • The new occupational health and safety standard ISO 45001 offers a range of benefits
  • Certified systems for safety-critical industries
Companies that implement and certify a HSE management system can prove to business partners, employees and the public that they have reliably identified occupational health and safety risks and opportunities and implemented measures effectively.

The focus is currently on ISO 45001, the new standard for occupational health and safety management systems. This was released in 2018 and replaces BS OHSAS 18001. This new standard includes a range of measures for an updated approach to occupational health and safety that covers complex project structures. For the DEKRA experts, this constitutes an important advance. For the first time, ISO 45001 combines traditional occupational health and safety with operational health management. ISO 45001 follows the same structure as all international management system standards and can be easily integrated in an existing quality and environmental management system.

Especially in safety-critical industries, customers are increasingly demanding that their technical service providers produce evidence of compliance with safety and environmental protection measures. The body of rules comprising the Safety Certificate for Contractors (SCC) is especially suitable for medium-sized companies. The combined management system for safety, health and environmental protection is also inspected by accredited certification bodies such as DEKRA and certified following a successful audit.

In addition, different sectors of the plant construction and operation industry have defined their own occupational health and safety standards that take into account the various hazards specific to their processes. The Global Wind Organization (GWO) standard, for example, defines occupational safety requirements in the wind energy industry. The GWO has defined a range of requirements for safety training designed to prepare engineers for working on wind turbines. The GWO certifies not only the training organization itself, but also a selection of predefined training modules.
