Functional Safety Fundamentals

Introductory Training (IEC 61508 / 61511)

Functional Safety Training

A standalone introductory day for those new to or at the early stages of their functional safety journey, or in need of a refresher. It will explain the different aspects, phases, and techniques used in functional safety, as outlined in the IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 standards, which are equally applicable to all other areas, including machinery and automotive.

The course will look at layers of protection, derive safety requirements from HAZOP/LOPA (see our other courses for those), and examine different types of failure and how they are addressed.
This will not be a deep dive into the mathematics or principles of functional safety, but rather a practical introduction that builds confidence and provides a foundation for further knowledge.
You will learn:
1. When to use functional safety techniques
2. How functions and systems are derived
3. Types of risk assessment
4. SIL determination methodologies
5. Reliability calculations
6. How to avoid systematic failures
7. Lifecycle planning
8. The role of audits and assessments
9. The role of maintenance and proof testing
10. How to break the jargon and acronyms!
This course is an introduction to Functional safety for practitioners across all sectors. Whilst primarily aimed at IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, there will be references to machinery (ISO 13849) and other sectors made.
This course aims to demystify functional safety and provide a solid background to those either just starting or looking to improve their functional safety knowledge. It will use real-world examples along with as little maths as possible.

A key aspect to our courses is for our delegates to gain the knowledge and solutions applicable to their own situations, so numbers are capped to ensure we have sufficient time for your feedback and early booking is therefore recommended.

Who will benefit

Plant Designers, Engineers, Operational staff, and managers (and those with similar responsibilities) from companies with potentially hazardous processes. In addition, those supplying products and services related to safety equipment and systems will benefit. This is aimed at being the first step on your functional safety journey.

Lots to cover but well-paced throughout. All expected content covered.

Very good and clear, trainers knowledge and ability to create clear understandable examples was the making of the course.
