Decommissioning is the planned, controlled process of permanently withdrawing of facility, plant, or asset from operational service and making it safe, secure, and environmentally compliant. It involves systematically removing hazardous substances, disconnecting and dismantling equipment, de-energising systems managing waste, remediating the environment, and verifying that the site no longer presents unacceptable risks to people, the environment, or future land use.
Within the UK Offshore Oil & Gas industry, this project phase represents the withdrawing of offshore energy infrastructure from use once it is no longer needed or is at the end of its life cycle, covering key activities like dismantling infrastructure, plugging and abandoning wells, and restoring producing areas
